Every year on September 16, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated all over the world. The ozone layer is a kind of “shield” of the planet that protects all living things from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Its preservation directly affects human health and the state of the environment.
To protect the ozone layer, on September 16, 1987, an international protocol was signed in Montreal - an agreement that limits the production and use of hazardous substances. The Montreal Protocol, created within the framework of the Vienna Convention, is called one of the most successful environmental agreements in the world. It entered into force in 1989 and became a true example of global cooperation.
Ukraine ratified the Vienna Convention in 1996, and in 1998 it joined the Montreal Protocol. Since then, our country has been participating in the implementation of international obligations aimed at restoring the ozone layer.
Implementation of the Montreal Protocol agreements by participating countries means not only protecting the health of millions of people, but also preserving ecosystems and curbing global warming.
